Gosh, "best governor ever?" Well at least she got her MTV. This is so scary. How does America go back to its progressive ideals?

Great question, wish I knew the answer.

The Miers nomination (and subsequent muted response from the Democrats) has vexed me on several levels. She's never been a judge, has not been a practicing private lawyer since 2000, and has scant appellate legal experience. Since 1995 (i.e., the last 10 years) she has been employed by George Bush as a political appointee. See Puffed Up Profile in Washington Post (close read gives a true picture of this woman's sketchy legal credentials--basically a corporate lawyer with political connections). Beyond her credentials, many other questions exist on this woman. Did Miers help to suppress G.W. Bush's DWI conviction and his record (or lack thereof) of service in the Texas Air National Guard? Somebody better check that out. The lengthiest segment in her legal career was as managing partner of the large Houston firm Locke Liddell & Sapp, LLP. This firm paid $22 million to settle a suit alleging it aided a client in defrauding investors at a time when Miers was the co-managing partner. Hello! She needs to be grilled big time on her involvement in this mess and potential ethical / professional lapses.

So the president has nominated a clearly underqualified person for the Supreme Court of the United States who also happens to be a political go to, bag lady to clean up his messes. And the first words from Harry Reid, the Democratic leader in the Senate, are: "I like Harriet Miers." Say what?!?! The Democrats are a dysfunctional lot that lack the backbone of a true opposition party. Basically, it appears they are going to roll over on Miers because "it could have been alot worse" (see remarks of Sen. Schumer quoted in the CNN article). I am highly disappointed that the democratic process with its checks and balances appears to be unraveling. Only the dogged special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald gives me hope in our system.

Update: Check out this spoof of Harriet's little notes to Georgie (from Jesus' General).
