Comments Upon
Sarah Silverman

My post in the "odds and ends" section on Ms. Silverman was already lengthy so I put an additional thought here in the Comments section.

I've only caught bits and pieces of Sarah Silverman's shtick on TV but, in my observation, she never treads far from her Jewishness. In fact, the whole act is molded around a JAP (Jewish American Princess) hyper-caricature of whatever subject she is addressing. It's close but not the same gig as Dave Chappelle who basically caricatures blacks (and whites discriminating against blacks); however, both are limited by the race box in which their muse resides. I'm not sure why Chappelle weirded out and walked away from his popular show at Comedy Central but I do know the guy was doomed to sink in popularity regardless. There are only so many black / white racial jokes one can tell. There are only so many Rick James / pimp daddy parodies to be done. It's a shallow pool in which Mr. Chappelle chose to swim. He hit a gold mine but he'll be trading on his laurels from here on out IMHO. Sarah Silverman is not quite a Jewish version of Chappelle (but it has been rumored that she shall be replacing Chappelle on Comedy Central); however, she has placed herself in the same race / ethnicity box. Once she gets overexposed on a weekly show, there is only so far she can stretch this narrow humor--probably just one season. For Sarah's sake, I hope she hits it big in that one season on whatever channel gives her a show but I won't be watching. The whole thing is just all too predictable.
