 'Major Combat Operations Have Ended'? It is a fitting time to reflect upon a quote from President Bush's "Mission Accomplished" speech aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln on May 1, 2003: "[M]y fellow Americans: Major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed. (Applause.) And now our coalition is engaged in securing and reconstructing that country." Link. The US military death toll in Iraq for October 2006 hit 100 (with two days left in the month), the third highest monthly total since the US invaded Iraq. Link.
